Matt was an officer in Army intelligence for six years. He spent a year in Afghanistan, where he met numerous Afghans, including Khoshall Murad. He is the author of A Democracy Is Born, which details his experiences working on the 2004 Afghan election. Murad is a native of Afghanistan, and he currently lives in a village outside Jalalabad in eastern Afghanistan. As a young man, Murad taught English to men and women in Kabul in defiance of the Taliban regime, risking his life in doing so. He currently works as an interpreter there.
